The area around Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as the lakeside, is the most central area of Hanoi, home to the iconic Turtle Tower. On weekends, the streets are closed to pedestrians, and it becomes very crowded with events and street art performances.

My niece and I visited this area on a weekday, so there were fewer tourists, but the streets were still bustling with diverse modes of transportation.

We walked around the lakeside, admiring the remaining French-style buildings such as the Central Post Office, the characteristic old houses of Hanoi, the parks along the lake filled with flowers and centuries-old trees, and ancient temples like Ngoc Son Temple located on an island in the middle of the lake with its distinctive red wooden bridge.

The air was very cool due to the mist rising from the lake and the greenery, even in the middle of a hot summer. It can be said that the Hoan Kiem Lake area is the heart of the capital, a must-visit if you come to Hanoi.

Surrounding the lake is the Old Quarter and the French Quarter with a variety of shops and services, all within a few steps.
